Switch to Aperture Priority Mode
Select a Low ISO for Smooth Shots
Control Shutter Speed
Control White Balance
Changing Focus Mode
Changing Metering Modes

Photoshop CS4

I was just getting use to Photoshop CS3 when Adobe decided to bring out the new Photoshop CS4 late last year. I must admit I've been reluctant to try it out and I've only had a quick look at it recently. What I quickly noticed was the new adjustment and mask panel, making the use of both these feature quicker and easier to use. Other new features include intellgent scaling which automatically analyses the image as you adjust it and intelligently recomposes it to preserve the most visually interesting areas, extended depth of field features, new 3D layer features etc. Check it out here

Tyson Crosbie

Tyson Crosbie is interesting photographer I've just discovered.

.....Crosbie’s photographs are straight photographs of found objects that are often composed of urban decay. He does not utilize manipulation or cropping with these images. Crosbie considers the camera only as a tool, a black box with a hole on one side. Lens and shutter, film or digital do not matter-- Tyson is focused on what he can create with the tools at hand.....

What I really like about his work is that all his images are found (no digital manipulation) but they all have a painterly abstract quality. Check out more of his work here.

Using Gimp

Here's one of my recent photos of mannequins hands. I played with it in Gimp by copying a layer flipping it then playing with the opacity and masks just like you would in Photoshop.

It's always great to go back into history to see how far we've come. Here's a great site that outlines the history of photography and lists outstanding photos through the ages.

Colour Management

Students are always asking me why the colours on the monitor never match their prints no matter if they're printed at home on their printer or at a commercial processing shop. This is all to do with calibration and colour management. Here is great video explaining colour management. The comments also provide great tips on colour management and calibration.

Here's a photo I took a while ago. Its an image of dirty water with mold growing on a bucket outside. Yak! But by turning up the hue/saturation and playing with curves in Photoshop I got this mysterious beautiful photo. Try taking photos of subjects you wouldn't normally and play with them in Photoshop to see what you can create. Beauty can come from the ugliest of things.

Histograms

What are they and how do you use them? Histograms give you a visual representation of your exposure in terms of your shadows, mid-tones and highlights. These are useful when taking your photo and in post production (such as in PhotoShop Levels.) Watch this video to understand histograms further or follow this link.
